The new Escape Card from Discover is offering a six month introductory double mile promotion, and will give you 1,000 miles free each month that you make a purchase for 25 months. So the strategy with this card is to use this card exclusively for 6 months, then just make sure you buy something (or charge a monthly recurring fee like NetFlix) to it each month to get the additional 25,000 miles.
Discover is positioning the Escape card as the “Airline Rewards Card with Enhanced Travel Benefits”. With the new Discover Escape Card you get:
- Double Miles on travel and restaurant purchases. One Mile for every dollar on all other purchases
- Flexible redemption options for travel, gift cards, or cash.
- Double Miles through Discover’s exclusive online shopping site
Discover is getting more creative trying to build lifestyle specific cards – this one could make sense if you have lots of purchases that can be made through their web site. Check out these other specialty cards from Discover:

I got it right – you need to charge $1K/mo for 6mo then, any charges at all for the next 18? 24 mo total.
This card have any annual fee?
Right – you could charge any amount you like during any month, but your charges during the first 6 months get you double miles. $60 annual fee (I don’t love that, but it does make for a painless and cheap way to get some tickets).
I looked at http://www.discovercard.com/escape/
Looks to me like double miles are not time limited. And they convert to $credits toward travel, so, in effect, are a 2% rebate, so long as used for travel only. The math works if you have a nice monthly amount running through the card. Nice find.
