Daily Deal! FREE TurboTax Federal Edition and FREE e-File – Is It Right For You?

by Rate Nerd on February 12, 2009

If you have a simple income tax return and don’t need much tax guidance, TurboTax Federal Free Edition is a great deal.

TurboTax Free Edition searches for all the tax credits you’re eligible for to get you the biggest refund possible.  And it really is free, and you get a free e-file, although you will need to pay $29.95 for the State Edition to file your state 2008 taxes.  Still, I think that’s a pretty good deal.

Is Free TurboTax Right for Your Tax Situation?

TurboTax has several versions, and it can be a bit confusing to know which one is right for you.  Basically, if you have much more beyond a W-2 statement, you should probably get one of the upgraded packages.  You can start with the free edition, and upgrade along the way if you need to.

  • If you’re a returning TurboTax customer or need everything Free Edition has to offer plus step-by-step guidance, choose TurboTax Basic
  • If you have a mortgage, childcare or medical expenses, or made charitable donations, TurboTax Deluxe will help you maximize your deductions for the biggest tax refund.
  • If you own investments or rental property, choose TurboTax Premier It has everything in Deluxe PLUS will provide extra guidance to help you get the most from your investments.

Note TurboTax Free Edition doesn’t cover tax schedules C, D, E, and F (required for people who own a business or have sold investments). Choose one of their paid tax software products if you need these schedules. Get your refund in as little as 9 days. E-file with TurboTax today. It’s Easy

Absolutely love TurboTax and efile, it’s great. Even better, I used the online version so I’ll be able to review it again next year.
