I’m sure I’m just overreacting, so take the following with a grain of salt, but the AmericaNet Bank website does not have a “fees” disclosure page – - which they are required to have by Federal law – - and they have numerous misspellings, which tells me they (i.e., their webmaster and/or marketing staff) are either not intelligent or observant, not to mention that their website is not the easiest to go through. Regardless, this may mean they are not be the best people to handle my money. 5.25% and 3.10% sound like great deals, but any suspicions which causes my upper lip to sneer and the hairs on the back of my neck to rise, makes me want to pass.

Better check that rate. I believe it is now 4% as of 4/22.

Thanks Jay – but I just checked their web site and they are still advertising 5.25% APY on this plan. But your point is well taken that rates can move quickly, and generally they will move in the wrong direction faster than the right direction (meaning savings rates will fall quicker than they rise, and loan rates will rise quicker than they fall).

Yes, but I called the bank after receiving an email alert just after opening an account. The person I spoke to informed me of the rate change on 4/22.
I also checked their site that is apparently a little slow.

I guess no one reads these comments. I called Americannet Bank 1-888-210-2028 again today. The nice lady there again informed me the rates have changed.
4% on the checking and 2% on the MMA. You don’t have to believe me, check it out yourself 1-888-210-2028.

Jay thanks for the follow up – I just called there and they told me that the advertised rates are still valid, until May 5, 2009. On that day, they will drop to 4% on checking and 2% on the money market account.

Confirmation from AmericaNet Bank on when these rates expire:

Right now the rates are as advertised starting May 5th they will be lowered to 4.00%- Rewards and 2.00%- Mega Money Market. Feel free to contact us if you have any more questions.

Thank you,

AmericaNet CSR

I’ve had an account with them for a couple of months now. Everything is great!

I saw on RateBrain that this rate is down to 4%. Have you considered updating this post? I clicked on this link in the email from ratenerd that said 5.25% only to be disappointed :(

Great comment and thanks for pointing this out. The theme of RateNerd is to present the most current unadvertised bank deals and offers – one of the dangers is that the banks frequently change promotions and rates, so when you see one on this site you generally need to move on it quickly.

Reader suggestions and sharing deals are very helpful, too!
